Lake Oahe has some VERY BIG northern pike!
Northern pike can be found throughout Lake Oahe, and there are a variety of ways to catch them.
One of the most popular times to target northern pike is in the spring. As the ice in the bays recede, the northern pike move towards the warmer water to spawn. This creates a recipe for some of the biggest fish in the lake to show up. You can use smelt, spoons or plugs to cast from shore.
The summer can be a bit trickier to find them as they disperse throughout the lake, feeding on ciscoes and other baits that roam the system. Many northern pike are caught by unsuspecting walleye anglers.
In the early fall, we tend to see them staging near the mouths of the bays. This creates another scenario to catch some big northern pike out of Lake Oahe.
